I want anyone to add ideas about this topic. I live in Australia and I firmly believe that it should be the choice of the cyclist to choosed whether or not they wear a helmet. If they are hurt then that is their responsibilty. Their was even a study conducted by a traffic psychologist, Dr Walker, were he had heaps of equipment on his bike to measure how far from him cars were when he was overtaken. He wore a helmet half the time, and spent the other half without a helmet. On average, cars stayed a furthur 9cm away from him and his bike when he wasn't wearing a helmet. He was hit twice, both times when wearing a helmet, and what does this prove? That wearing a bicycle helmet puts you at more risk at being struck by a car, than when you are without a helmet. And there is also evidence that showed that the amount of cyclists on the road decreased after the compuslory helmet lawd were introduced in Australia. As well as this, when the law was introduced in Aussie states in 1991, it wasn't because there was extensive research proving that helmets would make cyclists safer, and decrease road injuries and fatalities. No, it was because the Federal Government in Canberra threatened the state governments. They said that if the states didn't introduce the law, then they would cut their road funding. Well, that is my opinion, or part of it at least. I don't yet know what side I will be on for the debate, but I hope it is afffirmative. The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon should be taught to next year's 6th graders. I was very detailed and seemed real. I learned a lot about the 1960s and the Civil RIghts Movement that I did not know before reading the book. The characters were real and so were the setting and the conflict. Plus, I enjoyed the story. I cared about Stick and I realy was appalled when he was killed in the novel. I think next year's students will enjoy. It is one of the best written historical fiction novels I have ever read.» type a response

We live in a country that seems more and more slanted towards entitlement. We start early be telling our little leaguers that there is no such thing as winners and losers (lots of them don't keep score or records anymore) and then at school we tell them it isn't their fault they can't pay attention and put them on medication. We have third and fourth generations now on welfare, which was supposed to be a hand up instead of a hand out. They know nothing else. The government has not once in it's history proven itself capable at effectively managing anything...how about the US Postal Service? Yet we add more and more debt and insist upon even more programs. We want to just throw resources at a problem, trying to fix symptoms instead of finding the cause and then identifying some common sense solutions that work within our budget. It is time we started seriously trimming the fat out of our government. If you find yourself in need of assistance you need to seek our your family, your friends, and your local church. Instead of constantly pointing the finger at somebody else for your problems and looking to the government for help, why not take responsibility for yourself. Acknowledge your circumstances and look to God for guidance into a better situation. The answer is smaller government, less entitlement, and more personal responsibility.» type a response
